Chicago Jews Condemn Israeli Defense Force Attacks on Palestinian
School for Blind Children
Not In My Name, a group of Chicago Jews critical of Israeli
policies toward Palestinians, will hold a vigil outside the
Israeli Consulate at 111 E. Wacker at 12 Noon on Friday, February 23, to
protest the Israeli Army shelling of the Al-Wataniya School for Blind
Children.
The shelling, which lasted for three hours on Tuesday
evening, February 20, 2001, terrorized the dozens of blind girls who
live and learn in the school, devastated the school building and
also damaged nearby homes.
David Zinder, Media Coordinator for Not In My Name, stated
that "I am shocked and outraged at this attack. It
contradicts every Jewish value I hold dear.
Israel must end its attacks on Palestinian
children and end the siege of Palestinian towns that is
causing widespread misery. News of this attack lends
additional weight to the recent findings of Amnesty International,
namely that Israel cease the reckless and random shooting in
residential areas."
Al-Wataniya provides education and housing to 75 blind
girls, ranging in age from 5 to 18. It is located opposite the
Israeli settlement of Psagot in Al-Bireh, Ramallah. According to
Defence of Children International/Palestine Section, Tuesday's attack
has succeeded in terrorizing dozens of blind children
and school personnel. "The crime is doubled when
it is committed against disabled children who can hear
the sound of the explosions, but cannot see what is
happening around them. We do not know what to do now to protect
the children," reported the school's headmaster Mr. Hayyan al-Idrisi.
